Time to Choose Who You Use, Arizona

Consumer Coalition Launches to Advocate for Energy Choice,
Oppose Repeal of Customer Rights Law

PHOENIX, AZ (January 10, 2021) — For more than 20 years, a little-known Arizona law, the Arizona Energy Competition Act, has allowed for a regulated, but competitive energy market for homes and businesses, but the law was never implemented. Now consumers are at risk of losing forever the freedom to pick their energy supplier as utilities are working to repeal the law and retain their monopolies.

This week, Choose Who You Use launched to remind consumers about the benefits of choosing their service provider through a market that offers well-regulated choice, and the risks of repealing laws without debate. The coalition aligns with the overwhelming majority of voters who are frustrated by Arizona’s current providers.

Choose Who You Use polling shows that, of surveyed Arizonans:

  • 80 percent want the freedom of choice in energy and direct access to state-approved electric service providers
  • 84 percent want the option to purchase green power and energy
  • 90 percent want a “customer protections bill of rights” to protect customers from unfair, misleading, and deceptive practices, including protection from unauthorized billings

Choose Who You Use is dedicated to educating consumers about the value of retail energy choice and advocates for Arizona consumers—protecting them from unfair, misleading, and deceptive practices. The coalition stands ready to defend the Arizona Energy Competition Act, standing up for Arizonans’ right to pick the type of energy product that best fits their needs.

Competitive energy providers’ right to petition to provide regulated competitive retail electric services is a crucial tool to Arizona’s economic development and energy future. Choose Who You Use supports giving customers the choice they have been denied for so long. Visit the Choose Who You Use website here to learn more and add your voice for choice
